beltsquid's Uncharted Text From Last Night graphics in which Chloe texts Nate, but there's so much I wanna do before I have kids. like die. Kind of short and drabbly.
"Oh, shit."
Confused, you watch through half-closed eyes as Chloe springs out of bed and goes rifling around for her things. It's eight in the morning. Does she need to be somewhere? Because otherwise it's way too early to be swearing over the state of the world.
"Nate, I'm borrowing twenty dollars off you," she says, picking up your wallet. "I'll pay you back when our client pays up. Okay?"
She's gone before you can agree, but she's left some of her things, so you're pretty sure she'll be back. (Otherwise you don't really know where to send them.)
You're up by the time she returns with a small box in hand, and she nods her thanks to the cup of tea you made her as she opens it up.
Ah.
"You don't need to pay me back," you tell her, but you find another twenty in your wallet the day after you get paid.
"So," says Chloe. "You're having a baby."
Elena laughs at something Charlie's said in the kitchen, and you can't help but smile at the sound. You nod.
"How do you feel?"
"Uh." Okay, maybe after the surprised glass breaking and all the congratulations is the time for honesty; Chloe can occasionally drag it out of you. "Scared, mostly. I don't want the kid to end up like -"
You look down, trusting you don't need to finish that sentence. After a moment, Chloe bumps your shoulder.
"If you're really trying, it won't happen," she says. "Besides, you're not so terrible a person to end up like."
"Are you saying I'm terrible?" you demand, mock-offended to try and lighten the mood, and she laughs and hits you.
"Only a little."
You laugh with her this time, and when both of you calm down you look at her thoughtfully.
"Am I gonna be asking you the same question one day?"
She shakes her head emphatically. "No. No, I don't fancy settling down in one place or homeschooling."
You could say something about her settling down in one place considering that barring work, she's basically been living here with Charlie for the past four years, but you don't.
"That's what I would've said a few years ago," you say instead.
"I'm not you," she points out, and you nod, conceding. After a mouthful of wine, she gives you a fond smile. "Stop worrying. You're gonna make a great dad."
"And you're gonna make a great babysitter."
She splutters, but she's smiling too wide to take seriously. "Don't you dare ask me to babysit!"
