When I was little, I always wanted to be
an astronaut, Mum!
(that was before I found out you had to
be good at physics and fairly fit)

Something about flying,
and the final frontier
and my parents being sci-fi nerds.

I suppose I got my wish.

You were always
            just there
                        watching
until one day I got it into my head:
You were something to conquer,
somewhere to come first.

I made you mine.
Learned to live without gravity.
Left my footsteps in the dust.
Flew my flag which didn’t flutter.
Recorded the evidence for all to see.
One small step for man.

But life on the moon gets boring
when every day the stars
shine in your eyes until eventually
you know their bright alignment
better than craters and how
the moon is not made of cheese.

I let the star pull me in
but stayed in orbit before realizing:
It wasn't fair on you
(so I left).

Twinkle, twinkle...
Without her, there was no life.
Sure, there were storms and flares,
but they died down.
The spots didn’t matter.
She eclipsed everything.

There’s a reason why they tell you
not to play with fire.
