Mass Effect (Relay Monument Incident): Garrison Rations

Title: Garrison Rations
Rating: G
Words: ~520
Summary: When Garrus and Tali get dextro flu on Rannoch, Ashley tries to make them chicken noodle soup. Or the dextro equivalent which she can't pronounce.
Related works: 3 era future of "Second Contact War", though not necessarily canonical for that universe nor necessarily in the same continuity as "Reparations".

"Damn, Ash, I didn't know you cook."

As James reaches into her pot with a spoon, Ashley bats his hand away. "Dextro," she howls. "Taste test the left pot if you have to."

He smirks, dipping into the soup she indicates. "Ah: You cook for your turian boyfriend."

She is going to kill Shepard for spreading the turian boyfriend and human girlfriend thing.

"And my quarian little sister," she corrects him. Garrus and Tali have both been sick since Rannoch, something about the bacteria there. Ashley hadn't been listening, because she'd had a few symptoms for a day or two, but they seem to have cleared up just from the dextro allergy meds she takes regularly.

"S'good," he says, getting out a bowl. "I hope the dextro version works out too."

Ashley grimaces. "Me too. Abuela didn't exactly have a dextro recipe for chicken noodle soup." In fact, abuela would probably disown her for trying. "I'm petitioning Shepard for more turian crew members -"

"Tu novio might get jealous," James teases.

"- so I have someone to taste test," she finishes, rolling her eyes. She's not interested in other turians; it's only ever been Garrus. Not that she plans on telling James her family's history nor the way she and Garrus false started.

He reaches for her omni-tool on the bench, bringing up the tips on dextro cooking she'd had open, and squints into the pot. "I think it's done. Levo one's done, anyway."

"Okay," she says, switching off the stove. "Here's hoping I don't kill my boyfriend."

"Mucha mierda," says James, serving himself the levo soup.

Ashley smiles. "Luck is for the lonely, Vega."

Usually Ashley subscribes to the school of thought that turians look like cats, but Garrus has never looked more like a bird than when he pokes his head out of the nest of blankets he's made on one of her couches.

"Ash?" he asks blearily.

"Hey," she says, kissing him on the forehead and finding a seat. "Where are your hands? I made you something."

A couple of the blankets drop, and he reaches for the bowl hopefully. "Is this...?"

"Dextro soup that's supposed to be good for flu," she supplies. Solana told her what it was called, but she can't pronounce it. "Yes. I looked it up."

Garrus leans over. "You're the best."

He goes in for a kiss, but Ashley puts a finger on his mouth. "You're sick," she reminds him. "And I might have screwed it up; I couldn't taste test it. Save calling me the best for after you eat it without dying."

"You're the best for a lot of other reasons," he says, headbutting her, and Ashley melts a little.

"Eat," she murmurs.

Obediently, he tries a spoonful, swallows, and holds up one talon in a gesture he's picked up from James. "Still the best."

"Okay," she says, standing up before he can pull her into the nest. "Good. Now I have to go put that through a thousand filters for Tali."

"Stay," he whines.

"I'll be back, you big whiny bird," she says, smiling despite herself. "Eat up."
